Lesson 5

Lesson 5: BHFM and The Stoic Advisor

Weekly Habits for Success – Daily Task to The Habits for Success

“Don’t be ashamed to need help. Like a soldier storming a wall, you have a mission to accomplish. And if you’ve been wounded and you need a comrade to pull you up? So what?” —Marcus Aurelius

A “Mega-Producer” is successful for many reasons. All training and preparation working to enhance innate ability. But Mega-Producers also know when and how to ask for help.

I am reminded of the many years of correspondence between Seneca and Lucilius. Seneca, over the course of many years, advised Lucilius on many things. They discussed a number of topics, such as strife within the cities of Roman Empire, plagues, friendship, the keys to living a good life… all things that remain germane to our lives today.

What is most intriguing about this multi-year correspondence is that Seneca was very successful and Lucilius was likely successful as well. So why did these successful individuals feel the need to correspond with each other? Well, it’s likely that they served as accountability partners to each other – each holding the other accountable for their individual actions and behaviors, each acting as a sounding board for the other.

There are also 20 letters written between Marcus Aurelius and one of his favorite tutors that survive to this day. Fronto was more than just a tutor to Marcus – Fronto was someone who held Marcus accountable.

Think about that. The most powerful man in the empire, possibly the world, relied on his teacher to hold him accountable. Marcus was willing to set his ego aside (as he was Emperor) and rely on someone to hold him accountable to do the good work he believed he was put here to do.

Who do you have that holds you accountable?

BHFM is here to help hold you accountable. Maybe it’s your consultant, maybe it’s one of the other BHFM reps that you’ve developed a friendship with? Regardless of where you are in life or in business, you must have an accountability partner. Someone who will not only tell you when you are going off track, but who will also give you guidance to get you back on track.

You may be thinking, “Aw, come on. I have lots of willpower and I don’t need anyone’s help. I prefer to do it myself. And anyway, everyone is so busy and I don’t want to impose on them.”

Don’t worry, it’s not an imposition. You’ll be helping them as much as they help you. And make it fun! Set up fun bets for each daily habit. Make it simple, like placing a quarter or a dollar into a jar every time you fall short. When you guys come to the next quarterly BHFM training, decide which charities you want to donate the money to.

It’s a win-win. You not only become more successful, but you add value to the world with charitable contributions along the way!

NEW HABIT: Find an accountability partner

NEW TASK: Find an accountability partner and speak with them every single day (and at least once over the weekend), even if it’s only for a couple of minutes, to hold each other accountable.
